What is Live Blackjack?

After players place their bets, each player gets two cards, usually face up, while the dealer gets one card face up and one face down. You must then decide how to proceed. 

You can “hit” if you’d like another card, or “stand” if you like your hand strength. You can also “double down”, which requires you to double the stake size to receive exactly one more card. This option is best used when you have 9, 10, or 11. If your two starting cards are paired, you can “split” them. This means you end up playing two hands, but you must also stake an additional bet to cover the second hand.

There are a few other rules, like the dealer must hit on any hand totaling 16 or less. Also, if you land a natural blackjack with your first two cards, you win a 3:2 payout. Furthermore, if the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, you can make an “insurance” side bet, which pays 2:1 if the dealer has a natural blackjack. 

Be reminded that some exotic variants have slightly different rules. Make sure you understand them before hitting the tables.

You must use the double down and split options wisely. For instance, you almost always double down on a hard 11. You can double down on a hard 10 if the dealer’s up card is a nine or under. If your hand value equals nine, then you should only double down if the dealer’s up card is between 3 and 6. Avoid doubling soft hands if the dealer’s hand looks strong. 

Savvy players only split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s, Jacks, Queens, or Kings. This is because 20 is already an excellent hand with a high chance of winning. 

The most important tip is to establish an appropriate session bankroll. It’s a good idea to also set a win limit and a loss limit. Once one of those limits has been reached, have the discipline to walk away.
